"Light Sprang Forth" - celebrating light through the eyes of an artist, to mark the International Day of Light 2019

Celebrate the International Day of Light in 2019 (IDL 2019) through the eyes of an artist.  Visit Light Sprang Forth", exploring the work of artist Henri van Bentum.

IDL 2019 evolved from the International YEAR of Light in 2015.
The International Year of Light 2015 was an initiative of a large consortium of scientific bodies together with UNESCO, and brought together many different groups including scientific societies and unions, educational institutions, technology platforms, non-profit organizations and private sector partners.

In proclaiming an International Year of Light focusing on the topic of light science and its applications, the United Nations recognized the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health.

"Light is all around us and takes many forms. The human eye can detect just a small fraction of light, which spans from radio waves to infrared to X-rays and gamma rays."

Light plays a vital role in our daily lives. It has revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.
